How to read these rankings

A ranking is only as useful as the question it answers. Median household income tells you what a typical full-time-earning household actually takes home — it is the single best one-number proxy for purchasing power, but it deliberately ignores wealth, retirement assets, and household size. Median home value answers a different question: what an owner who lists their home today might reasonably ask. Together they describe affordability; on their own they describe almost nothing.

We rank states, ZIPs, and cities on the same underlying Census tables a federal economist would use. The lists are sortable, but they are also editorial: we explain what each metric measures, where it breaks down, and which secondary numbers to pull before drawing conclusions. A state with a high bachelor's-degree share but a low homeownership rate, for instance, almost always has a young, mobile labor market — the rankings hint at the pattern; the methodology page tells you why.
