About
Public data, beautifully presented.
City Zip Compare is an independent publication that turns U.S. Census Bureau data into clean, comparable insights for every ZIP code, city, county and state in the country.
Why we built it
The U.S. Census Bureau publishes one of the richest, most carefully constructed datasets on the planet — and almost no one outside of researchers, planners, and analysts ever reads it directly. The official census.gov interface is built for those professionals; everyone else ends up bouncing between real-estate marketing pages, opinion blogs, and outdated almanacs.
City Zip Compare was built to close that gap. We pull directly from the Census Data API, present every metric with its source table cited, and explain what the numbers mean in plain English. No paywalls, no email gates, no inflated marketing claims.
What we publish
- A demographic, income, housing and education profile for every U.S. ZIP code.
- City, county and state pages with the same metrics aggregated up.
- Side-by-side comparisons across any two places.
- Rankings of states and metros across dozens of metrics.
- Long-form editorial articles on cost of living, housing, retirement and migration.
How we work
Our standards are documented in detail. Read our editorial policy, methodology, and data sources for the full picture. For corrections or feedback, see contact.
How we analyze data
Every place profile follows the same five-step pipeline. We (1) fetch the latest available ACS5 vintage directly from the Census Data API, (2) validate the response against the published Bureau schema, (3) join it to a canonical state, county, and ZIP geography, (4) compute comparative context against the national median, and (5) render it alongside a programmatic narrative that names the underlying source table for every figure. Margins of error are respected: we do not report a difference between two places as meaningful unless it exceeds the published MOE.
Editorial standards
- Primary sources only. If a number appears on this site, it traces to a named Census table (B19013, B25077, B15003, B23025, B25064, B25003, B08303, B01003) or to a documented derivation from one.
- No AI-generated facts. Narrative copy is generated from real numbers, not invented from prompts. Every claim in a place profile is a function of that place's actual ACS5 row.
- Update cadence. ACS5 vintages refresh on a rolling cache as the Bureau publishes — currently vintage 2023, released December 2024.
- Corrections. Reader-reported errors are reviewed within five business days and dated in-line when fixed.
Independence
City Zip Compare is reader-supported through display advertising and, eventually, transparent affiliate relationships. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau or any government agency, and editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers. We do not accept sponsored placements inside place profiles, rankings, or methodology pages.
